West Africa Youth Employment Data Launch

Dakar, Senegal –June, 2025, World Data Lab (WDL) begins deepening its youth employment data analytics to focus on more granular subnational data for  West Africa. This work builds on its partnership with the Mastercard Foundation to develop the Africa Youth Employment Clock (AYEC). 

The AYEC is a publicly available digital labour market data model that can be accessed at www.africayouthjobs.io. Country-level youth employment data is available for all 54 African states. Sub-national data is currently available for Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Nigeria and Uganda, where the AYEC was successfully launched in 2024. Sub-national data will expand to Senegal, where a country launch of the AYEC will be held in October 2025. 

As part of its stakeholder engagements in Dakar during the West Africa Youth Employment Data Launch on 18-20 June, 2025, the WDL team met with officials from Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar (UCAD), the Agence Nationale pour la promotion de l’Emploi Jeune (ANPEJ), the La Direction du Suivi et de l’Evaluation des Performances des Projets et Programmes (DSEPP) of the Ministère de l’Economie, du Plan et de la Coopération du Sénégal, the Chambre de Commerce d’Industrie et d’Agriculture de Dakar (CCIAD), the International Labour Organization, the World Bank, and Mastercard Foundation country officials in Dakar.

A Data for Development Hackathon – Senegal 2025 event under the theme “Unleashing the Potential of Youth Labor Market Data in WAEMU” was held on June 19 in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation and the École Nationale de la Statistique et de l’Analyse Économique (ENSAE), at the ENSEAE Auditorium in Dakar where the winner, Mouhamed Diop, was announced, who will receive an internship with WDL for 1 year.   The final event also featured a Presentation by WDL of the Africa Youth Employment Clock (AYEC), and insights regarding Africa youth employment, as well as West African Economic and Monetary Union and Senegal insights.  The Hackathon also presented an opportunity to engage with organizations promoting AI development in Senegal, such as AI Hub Senegal and Galsen AI.
