ASEAN Insights: Middle Class Growth and Financial Health

ASEAN's middle class is already one of the world's most important growth stories, with 393 million people today and a further 117 million expected by 2036.

ASEAN is entering a new consumer era. The region has 393 million people in the middle class today — around 16% of APAC's middle class and 56% of ASEAN's own population — and is projected to add another 117 million middle-class citizens by 2036.

The region's expansion is concentrated in its largest and fastest-moving economies. Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines are expected to drive much of the growth, while Malaysia already has 88% of its population in the middle class.

Key insights

  • APAC's middle class is projected to grow from 2.4 billion to 3.1 billion people by 2036.
  • ASEAN accounts for 393 million middle-class consumers today, and is expected to reach roughly 510 million by 2036.
  • More than 300 million ASEAN consumers are in the lower middle-class band of $13–45 per day, where financial health gains can be especially meaningful.
  • Financial inclusion is improving: formal saving is projected to rise from 23% to 28%, while informal credit use remains much higher than formal credit use.

The data shows that access is spreading faster than resilience. Around 54 million people in ASEAN remain below the financial inclusion threshold in 2026, a number projected to fall to 32 million by 2036. The opportunity is to help new middle-class households move from basic access toward durable savings, safer credit and greater financial security.
